Things You Must Know About Creating A Compost!

Have you ever thought about creating a bin for compost? With the variety of ways that there are to actually construct a compost bin, it could get a bit overwhelming.

First, consider your budget when deciding how you want to approach building a compost bin.  A more complex compost bin, usually made of lumber, is naturally going to be more costly to build than building a compost bin that is less complex. One of the reasons for this is that you will need to make sure that you use only pressure treated lumber when building a compost bin. Anything other than pressure treated lumber or wood that is naturally opposed to rot will begin to decay over time along with your waste materials.

You can build a compost bin from a barrel or a drum. If you have a barrel or drum. If you don’t you can obtain one cheaply. This is the easy and inexpensive way to construct a compost bin. All you have to do is drill some holes and you can then begin adding your waste materials directly to the barrel or the drum. If you want to go a step further you can also install a crank when you build a compost bin. This will make it easier to turn your waste materials periodically during the composting.

Wooden pallets can also be used for building a compost bin. You should be aware that if the wood that is used in the pallets is not treated then the compost bin may not last very long; however. Along the same lines, wooden snow fencing can be used to build a small compost bin as well. You will need to use either metal or wooden support stakes to hold the fencing upright.

You can also use a plastic barrel or tub for constructing a composting bin as well. As is the case when using a drum you will need to make sure that you drill holes into the plastic. This is essential because it will allow your compost materials to receive proper ventilation as well as allow for proper draining when you add water to the mixture.

Of course, keep in mind that a compost bin is not a necessity to composting. If there are no rules where you live and you have enough space away from your home you can easily use a uncomplicated compost pile and place some wire mesh or fencing around it to keep pests away.
