So You Want to Grow a Vegetable Garden?

Are you a true vegetable fanatic? Do you love vegetables and now want to grow your own? Vegetables are both delicious and fun to grow. Whether you want to grow your own vegetables for fun, to save money, to help you go organic, you are ready to start your very own vegetable garden and need to know how get going.

You need to begin with a few decisions first. You need to know about how large you want it to be, where you will grow your vegetables, what exactly you will be planting and growing, and how much of each you are going to grow. Base your decisions on what kind of vegetables you like and what you can grow in your area.

The next step is to get your tools and supplies. Of course you will need seeds and soil, but you will also need fertilizer, and tools such as a garden hose, shovels, trowels, cultivators, and whatever else you think you’ll need or will come in handy.

Now you can finally start gardening. Start by outlining and measuring out your garden plot, them start digging. Remove all the grass and use a tiller if you have one and need it. Use your other garden tools to break up and cultivate the soil. Make sure to remove all rocks, roots, and stuff in the ground that shouldn’t be there.

When the soil is broken up and cleared out, add the fertilizer or dirt from a compost. If you keep your own compost pile you will have lots of great soil full of nutrients.

When your garden is all set, you are ready to plan seeds or plants. I prefer to plant seeds beforehand in small trays early in the season and let them grow into plants, then replant them. This way you can be sure they will survive and that you will only plant the strongest ones.

Now read the pack of your see packets for the directions. Plant them at the time specified and water them accordingly. Be sure to weed the garden everyday or at least several times a week. The longer you wait the more it will get out of hand and the more likely the plants you want won’t survive.

Soon your vegetables will start to grow and they will be ready to pick. Gather your vegetables when they are ripe and ready and enjoy them all summer long!
