Simple Tips for Organic Weed Control

Lawn care and getting rid of those horrible weeds really is not that difficult. If you have ever wanted to know how to get rid of weeds and keep your lawn green, then you probably want to do so now given the time of year it is.

So, with everything else to worry about, how can you find ways to achieve a great lawn, do it organically, and not struggle all summer long, everyday out in the hot sun? Well, your in luck-below you will find some simple, very important advice that will help you accomplish all of the above.

First tip – you need to not let yourself get overwhelmed. This can be very hard and can require a lot of discipline, but remember that it is only your lawn, so chill out! Also, if you follow my guidelines you can feel good about yourself, since you will be helping the environment by using less water, less pesticides/herbicides (and all those used will be organic and safe), you will have a great yard, and in less time!

Second tip – starting from the bottom up. No, this does not mean starting with the grass roots and fertilizing. This actually means starting with the soil below the grass that the grass roots grow in (hopefully). If you want to spend less time on your lawn fighting weeds, then first concentrate on your soil Make sure it is healthy and that there is enough of it (generally about 6 inches or more). Why? Well, if your grass does not have a good support base (i.e. good soil), then it will be prone to having weeds grow in it easily. Essentially, you need to go on the offensive-get your grass and soil healthy and then you can worry about the weeds.

Second, you need to understand how to properly water your lawn. If you are watering improperly then you are probably just feeding the weeds and hurting your grass’ roots. What is bad watering? Well, if you water every day for about 15-30 minutes you are not going to have the best results. Why? Because you are not forcing the grass to develop deep, healthy roots (kind of like just eating candy). You need to water longer and less frequently. Doing so will allow the water to seep down into the soil, and force the roots to follow it. Then you won’t have to water as often which will prevent weeds from being able to survive between watering. Basically you will be dehydrating the weeds by not giving them water everyday, while your lawn will be totally fine because the roots are down so deep.

Final Tip-now that your roots are strong and your soil is healthy, you can start defending yourself from the evil weeds as they encroach. The key is that you will be ahead of the curve now instead of behind it. However, when those evil things appear, remember to stay away from the man-made chemicals that can hurt the environment and your lawn in the long-run! You will need to buy good organic herbicides, but remember that they do make some good ones that will kill crabgrass and other broadleaf weeds and dandelions. By using them instead of the chemicals you can not only feel good about what you are doing for the environment, but what you are doing for your lawn. In no time you will have the lawn that everyone in your neighborhood envies!
