How To Keep Plants Safe During Winter Seasons
Plants generally like to be in warm weather, where they have easy access to water and can grow without problems. But when Winter comes around for some climates, the extreme cold and lack of humidity can do a lot of damage. You can counteract these effects through several gardening tips.
The flowers or plants you are trying to protect already have mechanisms in which to defend themselves. If you obtain the right plants for your climate, you may not even have to lift a finger to protect them! The Witch Hazel is a good example of a flower that still continues to prosper even despite the effects Winter can have. Planting some will keep your yard looking fantastic, despite a barren appearance otherwise.
You should have the foresight to plan ahead for Winter when you plant during the Spring. Always pot plants when you are able- especially if they don’t do well during cold seasons. That way you can easily transport the plant at a moment’s notice when the time comes. Your garden can take a long time to move via this method, so it isn’t a good alternative for large operations.
You can protect bulbs by simply digging them out of the ground, cleaning them, and putting them in a dry location. Preferably, you should put the bulbs in a bag that is sterile enough to keep the bulb healthy all Winter long. Leaving bulbs in the ground would otherwise freeze them and render them lifeless come Spring.
Fruits and vegetables are most affected by the frost of Winter. And because they are not easily transported from your garden, you will just have to find a way to bring the defensive measures to the plants. One method is to get some newspaper and put it around and directly over the plants. If you don’t have newspaper you can use a similar material, or you can find special material from home and garden stores.
A young tree is easily damaged from a severe Winter. Unfortunately there isn’t much you can do about freezing rain causing havoc on tree limbs. What you can do, however, is make sure that the tree is getting plenty of nutrition and warmth by putting mulch at the base of the tree. You could also tie rope around the trunk for more benefit.
In Conclusion
Winter time doesn’t have to consume your hard work over the past few seasons. You just have to become smarter than Mother Nature, and plan ahead for the colder seasons. That way you can have a thriving garden for three out of the four seasons.
