There are many people out there who do not even think of having a lawn because they feel that a lawn can only be maintained with the help of professionals. This is far from the truth. All you need for taking care of a lawn is a vague idea of the various issues that matter in lawn care and health. If you have a basic education in this area, you can save money and time by DIY lawn care.

All you need to do is invest some efforts and some time in gaining the required knowledge. If you keep in mind some basic tips for DIY care, you will end up having a great looking and healthy lawn. What is more, you will not need to take assistance from a lawn care professional to give such a good look to your lawn.

One of the most essential tasks for having a great lawn is to mow the lawn at regular intervals. A great tip with lawn mowing is to let the lawn clippings remain on the lawn after you have finished with your mowing. The scientific reasoning behind this is to help the grass grow due to nitrogen being released gradually from the lawn clippings.

Apart from this, you need to water your lawn without fail and while watering your lawn, take care not to pour less than 2.5 cm of water. If you are wondering how to do this, just place a container on the lawn before beginning the watering. You also have to see to it that all areas of the lawn get equal amount of water. Equal distribution is important, as both lack of water and excess water can destroy your lawn.

Another tip you need to put high on your priority list while embarking on DIY lawn care is the fertilization process. The solution here is to get the easily available compost which is a great fertilizer for your lawn. The advantage with compost is that any kind of lawn benefits by it and it is a great source of organic matter as well as major and secondary nutrients. Thus, this fertilizer alone promotes the health of your lawn.

Aerating is a process that provides major help to your lawn. Generally you have to aerate your lawn if there is a build-up of thatch, if the ground has become dry and hard or if water does not seep through when you water your lawn. Aerating is an integral part of gardening and ensures that your lawn gets sufficient flow of water, fertilizer and nutrients from the plant roots so that they have a healthy growth.

If you practice the tips mentioned above in a religious manner, then you will be guaranteed a beautiful garden that will be the envy of your neighbors. You will have done this without the help of professionals and all in all, you will save on time as well as money and feel great about the whole idea of front yard landscaping.

The most common type of sod worms are the sod webworms. These are a common sighting in yards, golf courses, and in turfgrass areas. These worms are typically are gray or tan in colour when in the larvae stage. The larvae are caterpillars. These types of worms prefer fresh new grass to older grass that has been in place for years, but they can be found here. When a series of new lawns have been set these worms seem to multiply. As an adult the worms are gray and can range from half an inch to three quarters of an inch in length.

During the winter months these worms can be found partially grown larvae in their silky tunnels in the thatch and soil. The larvae activity usually starts around April and May. In mid- May to early June you can see these worms in their adult form. During the afternoon these worms scatter their eggs over the grass. They do this by flying in a zigzag pattern over the grass. Other parts of the day are spent hiding out in the shrubbery and the rest of the turf. During the night these worms come out to feed on the blades of grass and stems. An area of grass that has been infected by a webworm can be seen as a bare area that appears to be scalped. It can be seen from a distance as an irregular brown spot.

People often wonder how they can test for these webworms in the sod to make sure that the entire lawn has not been infected. You can use a homemade recipe by adding a quarter of a cup of laundry detergent to a gallon of water. The mixture is then applied to the damaged area around the outsides. It is pointless to add the mixture to the middle of the area as this grass is already dead and there won’t be any worms there. Within ten minutes of applying the mixture if there are any worms in the area they will start coming to the surface. If the home remedy does not work then you might want to try a store bought product that contains chemicals that can kill the worms. One such produce is TalstarOne. This product has been designed for a number of different turf pests and is safe to use on your grass. However, before spraying on your grass you should make sure that it is safe to use if you have an uncommon type of grass.

In some areas, these worms are called lawn moths. While they may infest any type of grass they are typically found in bluegrass. Although they do not pose a problem in the winter they can be a serious problem during the summer months if they are given the chance to multiply and feed upon your grass.

These worms are widespread throughout the United States and are quickly becoming a problem for some areas in Canada. For example, in recent years the Edmonton, Alberta area has seen an increase in the number of worms that have been infected yards and garden throughout the city.

Tomatoes are among some of the most popular vegetables to grow in your backyard. Rightly so too, because for some reason, homegrown tomatoes taste about 500% better than store-bought ones. In fact, for a period of time when the tomato prices were unusually high, my husband and I boycotted store-bought tomatoes because they were simply a “cardboard tasting” habit for sandwiches. However, once summer started, we decided to grow our own beefsteak tomatoes. It was just too weird to have a burger without a tomato on it! If you’re interesting in growing some good-tasting juicy tomatoes as well, here are some tips to help you on your journey.

1. Starting the seeds. Tomato seeds germinate in temperatures 65F/18C or higher. They grow pretty easy from seeds. You simply get some small pots, put some potting soil in them, and bury the seeds according to the seed package directions. Keep the soil moist and keep them in a warm sunny spot where it can get at least 6 hours of sunlight a day. In a few days, you’ll see your seeds starting to sprout!

2. Starting from plants. The easiest way to start growing tomatoes is to get some tomato plants from the nearest home and garden center or nursery. Select dark green plants that look strong. Make sure it doesn’t have any tomatoes already growing on it, because that will keep the plant from growing to its fullest size. When you get home, re-pot the plant into a huge outdoor pot or simply place it in the ground where you want to grow it. It’s good to bury the plant all the way up to the top leaves so that it develops a good solid root base. Few plants can handle being planted this way, but for tomatoes, it works well. Be sure to plant your tomatoes in a place that gets full sun at least 6 hours a day throughout its growing season.

3. Watering your plants. Keep your plants moist, but don’t over water them. Over watering can do as much damage to them as under watering!

4. Fertilizing your plants. Fertilizing might be a bit of a pain, but it’s highly important. Most soil these days simply doesn’t have enough nutrients to produce nice sweet and healthy produce. You can get some good fertilizers at your local nursery or home and garden center that is made specifically for tomatoes. This works well because it’ll be sure to give your plant the most nutrients it needs.

5. Harvesting your tomatoes. The tomatoes will be ripe when they are nice and deep red. Don’t pick them green if you want the juiciest and sweetest tomatoes, however, they do last quite a long time if you need to harvest them early. Simply wrap them up in newspaper for long storage.

Enjoy! There’s nothing like home grown tomatoes!

Landscaping the surrounding area of your home is not a lot different than other types of landscaping. People like their home to look as good as possible so the entire neighborhood will be envious. The great thing about home landscaping is it is not hard, and almost anyone can do it without out professional help. It will take some energy and spare time but doing it yourself can be enjoyable and rewarding.

Using a home computer to pre-plan landscaping ideas with landscaping software is one way to help the do-it-yourself type. With this software inter-changing different layouts can be easily done until finding the best one to suit the individual needs.

If you prefer not to use landscaping software try searching online. The internet is a good resource to search for outdoor landscaping ideas. Using the internet can give you some insight and perspective on other completed projects to use on your own project .

There are likely thousands of different landscaping ideas that you will find to be useful for your yard and well within your budget and there are a lot of sites that focus specifically on home landscaping. These sites will also give you some great ideas as well as practical information. It is important to do extensive research before you begin your project to minimize the mistakes so that the job will not have to be done over again.

Keeping Costs Down

Even with a small budget you should still be able to find landscaping ideas to fit your yard and make it more beautiful. If you have a large budget you can do more, but even a limited budget will go a long way towards improving your yard. Projects like flower beds, paths and accent lighting will most likely be cheaper while projects like land contouring can get much more expensive.

Before you start your home landscaping project, look into hiring a company to help locate any underground utilities such as gas lines or electric lines that may be running through your project area. This is very important if you plan to do a lot of excavation. It may be much more expensive to repair a broken plumbing or electrical line than properly planning ahead to avoid this situation. It also could become dangerous to hit a live electrical line unexpectedly with a backhoe or shovel.

Check on the city zoning restrictions and requirements before starting your landscape makeover. Avoid costly mistakes by doing the research and taking out the proper permits ahead of time.

Interviewing landscape architects and contractors and searching online can uncover never before thought of outdoor landscape ideas. They can be expensive, but planned and executed properly, they will yield long lasting and valuable results.

Orchids produce some of the most spectacular and intriguing flowers in the world, but they can also be among the most difficult plants to care for. Despite the challenge of maintaining them, orchids have a continuing popularity among plant enthusiasts, and there are a variety of orchids available for both the expert botanist and the novice orchid hobbyist.

You can probably find an orchid or two for sale at your local garden center at an affordable price, while specialty shops will carry orchids that are extremely rare and expensive. Whatever your level of commitment to nurturing an orchid, there are a few things that you can do to help your plant produce beautiful flowers.

Orchids are accustomed to warm, humid climates and usually require plenty of light. Whether you are raising your orchid in a greenhouse or keeping it in your office, be sure to choose a spot for your orchid where it will be warm without drying out. Above all, make sure that your orchid receives enough sunlight to enable it to bloom.

Most orchids require a lot of exposure to sunlight, and failure to provide enough light will result in an otherwise healthy plant that simply does not bloom. However, the leaves of an orchid can become very sensitive to sunlight if they have been in low-light conditions for a prolonged period of time. Therefore, if you decide that your orchid is not getting enough light, move it little by little to an area with greater sun in order to avoid injuring the leaves with sudden overexposure.

When you water your orchid, make sure to thoroughly saturate the soil. Orchids like a moist environment, and allowing the plant to dry out could endanger its health. An orchid’s soil should also not be too heavy, and there should be good air circulation around the base of the plant.

A certain mixture of orchid-specific nutrients is also essential for a healthy orchid, and you can purchase a substance called orchid bark to mix into the soil for potting your orchid. While supplying vital nourishment to your orchid, the addition of orchid bark will also improve air circulation through the soil, keeping your orchid beautiful.

If you truly want to appreciate your orchid, you will also have to understand that orchids do not flower all the time. After your orchid has flowered, you will need to care for the plant until it is ready to flower again. Once the blooms have faded, you should cut off most of the stem, leaving at least an inch intact. As long as you give your orchid adequate nourishment, water and light throughout its growing cycle, it will eventually flower again.

Over time, you may find that you want to expand your collection of orchids to include more exotic and challenging varieties. Orchid nurseries and specialty shops will have products specifically designed for the care of orchids, and you will be able to find a lot of advice to help you care for these amazing flowers.

Jon Kelly is a published author who writes articles, that includes information on gardening and Orchids. Learning about the orchids history, charm and mysticism will make it an even more addictive hobby. To find out more please visit: Please visit: http://www.theorchidguide.com

One of the most environment friendly choices for lawn care is natural lawn care. It is a very healthy option and the end results are as good as or even better than the other ways. You have to be familiar with the basics of natural lawn care for you to start applying this to your lawn. Some basics have been discussed below in this article.

If you want to go the natural way and dispense with the usage of chemical fertilizers, you have to have a lawn that sparkles with health and doesn?t need the aid of chemicals and other similar products. So, your concentration should be on enhancing the over all health of your lawn with the aim to go natural.

The first thing you need to do for starting with lawn care is to test the pH factor of your soil. The ideal reading for pH has to be in the range of 6.5 to 7.0. This is an indication of the fact that the soil only shows mild symptoms of being acidic which is just perfect for your lawn. If the soil is highly acidic or if it is not acidic at all, then in both cases you have to rectify the situation and get it to the right levels of acidity.

After checking out the pH of the soil, you have to find out the amount of clay in your soil. If the clay content in your soil is on the higher side, the soil gets compacted and this hampers the free movement of nutrients and air through the soil. If the clay in your soil is on the higher side, you may have to go in for aeration which is a process of making way for air spaces, due to the holes created on the surface of the soil.

If you do not feel very confident about undertaking an aeration job on your own, then you can take the help of professionals or even hire an aerator to do your job for you. This will definitely provide good results.

Watering is one of the most integral parts of lawn care. If you water your lawn in the right manner, the grass will vibrate with health and the flora of your lawn will develop root systems that are very deep. This means that you will have a durable lawn which can protect itself even against harmful droughts. Before starting with the watering of your lawn, see to it that the lawn has no traces whatever of the previous watering. The best way to find out whether your lawn should be watered is to check it for footprints. If the imprints of your foot are visible for more than a couple of seconds, it is a guaranteed sign that the lawn is ready for watering.

If you keep these pointers in mind and have the right landscaping equipments, you will surely be rewarded with an amazing lawn that you can be proud of.

Most people spend a lot of time and money making the inside of their home look great. Now think what that home would look like if the same effort were put into the outside. I’m not talking about general landscaping, but some of the more functional elements. Let’s look for a second at what is probably the most underutilized part of many homes…the patio.

Chances are you don’t use this area as much as you could or should, but adding a patio cover will allow you to spend more time enjoying this area. And if you want it to look great and add value to your home, then you need to look carefully at wood patio covers. We all know wood looks great, but it will add functional benefits as well.

Think about the advantages of adding a patio cover. It provides shade, which will allow you to enjoy the outdoors on even the hottest summer day. It provides protection from the elements. Think how enjoyable it would be to sit outside during a warm summer rain or a cool rainy evening. It even, as we mentioned, increases the value of your home.

If all this sounds good to you, then you simply need to decide on what kind of patio cover to get. We think that although there are many choices, wood is best because it provides flexibility. You can create a cover that is unique. Wood, when treated, will hold up well in all the elements. And of course wood will always look good.

Just make sure the wood you choose will go with your home’s look. Pinewood is a great choice if you want to paint it because it holds the paint well. The drawback with pinewood is that you can’t get it with an anti-rotting agent. You can however get treated cedar, cyprus or redwood. If you plan on staining the wood, get one with a long grain. You’ll get a continuous design. Knots in the wood will not hinder it.

Now let’s get creative. Add decorative accents and designs to your patio cover. It’s a little extra work but well worth it because you’ll be making your patio cover more stylish, and more valuable. You can use arbors and lattice. These are ornate, intricate and beautiful. Use them in combination to make something truly unique.

When you begin your project, you may be tempted to buy into one of those pre-made patio kits. Know up front that most are made with artificial wood. They are not durable and in fact, in many cases, you’ll need to add real wood for support. Why not do it right and use real wood for the whole thing.

Other companies are producing do it yourself wood patio kits. Much like wood floors, these kits use wood tiles that interlock. They have the advantage of being easy to take apart, clean, and even moved to another location if that’s what you want to do.

But if you want to get the best cover for your patio, a solid wood patio cover is certainly a good way to go.

The history of organic vegetable gardening dates back many centuries ago as the ancient civilizations relied on this livelihood and fishing to put food on the table.

Back then, nobody used fertilizers and pesticides but as the world’s increased in population, the demand for food also went up. To fill the gap, scientists decided to introduce fertilizers and chemicals to cut the harvesting time and make the vegetables bigger.

Organic vegetable gardening only made a come back in the 1980’s making an old practice new again when the US Department of Agriculture encouraged farmers to do it by giving them incentives. This made more farmers join the bandwagon which is also being done in Europe.

But organic vegetable gardening is not just eliminating the use of fertilizers and pesticides. Farmers will have to use other means to make crop grows such as compost, crop residue, crop rotation, integrated pest management and mechanical cultivation in order to preserve soil productivity and combat pests.

The International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements is the regulator these days that tells farmers across the globe how this should be done. Their recommendations help crops grow in 75 million acres of land across the globe.

Their strategy is focused on sustainable development so that the land used today can only be used by the next generation as we have left for them a healthy ecosystem.

Organic vegetable gardening has proven to be effective because since its inception in 1980. To prove this point, one study has pointed out that the amount of corn and soybeans produced using this method was almost the same compared to those who used fertilizers and pesticides. The best part is that this was achieved without using that much energy and without the risk of having harmful chemicals enter our bodies.

It has been estimated by one university that if developing countries also practice organic vegetable gardening, they too can also double or triple their crops without wasting money on buying pesticides and fertilizes.

One thing you have to keep in mind here is that a percentage of vegetables being consumed in the US are imported from other countries.

Because organic vegetable gardening is so easy, anyone can do it. This will enable you to plant your own vegetables at home instead of buying these from the supermarket.

The key to a successful harvest using organic farming is planning. You will need the land to plant these on that has adequate sunlight and an efficient drainage system so that they are able to get water.

If you are able to figure that out, the only thing you have to worry about is what to plant because some vegetables do not well under certain conditions that could be attributed to the climate and the type of soil in the ground.

Those who know what they can and cannot plant will save themselves time and money so they can focus on what works.

The history of organic vegetable gardening has now come full circle as we are doing what the ancients have practiced long before we were born. You can do your part by buying those that are organically grown from the supermarket or planting your own.

The end result is that we eat healthy without ever thinking if these contain any chemicals that may be harmful to our bodies.

Beginning herb gardeners may worry about which types of herbs they should grow. There are many different herbs available, and some are more difficult to grow than others. There are a few types of herbs that are especially easy to grow for beginners. These are generally more hardy plants that don’t require a lot of fertilizer or special work.

Parsley - Parsley is a relatively hardy annual in zones 2-11. Both flat-leaf and curly varieties are easy to care for and grow very well without a lot of extra care. It can do well in full sun to light shade, and needs rich soil that is well-drained but moist. It doesn’t do particularly well in heat.

Cilantro - Also known as coriander - this annual herb doesn’t need exceptionally rich soil, and isn’t extremely particular about sun and shade. It can do well in full sun or light shade. It is relatively easy to care for, and does well in almost all zones.

Chives - Chives are a perennial herb. Chives can grow well in almost any soil, and almost any conditions. Chives have been known to be seen growing in old gardens that haven’t been tended in many years! It’s hardy in zones 3-9, and prefers full sun. It does do better in rich soils, but doesn’t need it to survive. Chives have a rich, oniony flavor, and they taste great on baked potatoes.

Oregano - This herb is an extremely popular herb, and it goes well with many different types of foods. It is commonly used in tomato-based pasta dishes, chicken dishes, and pork dishes. Hard in zones 5-9, oregano does well in raised beds, rock gardens, alongside roads or pathways, or just about anywhere! It needs full sun and well-drained soil, but it actually does better in poor, rocky soil!

Thyme - Thyme is a perennial herb. It is hardy in zones 4-6. It’s a small, shrub-like herb that requires full sun and moist, well-drained soil. It is quite hardy in its standard zones, and doesn’t require much care at all.

Basil - Basil in a warm-weather annual herb. It is hardy in most zones, but it requires hot, dry conditions to reach peak flavor. It needs full sun, and very rich, moist soil. The only major issues with growing basil are slugs and cool conditions. As long as basil has enough light and heat, and its soil is allowed to dry out between waterings, it usually requires little additional care.

Bay - Although it is a type of shrub, this is actually a very good herb for beginners to grow. It’s hardy in zones 8-11, and is remarkably hardy in those zones. It needs full sun to light shade, and rich, well-drained soil. It will tolerate variations in conditions rather well. Just remember, bay leaves reach their full flavor when dry, so be sure to press them between layers of paper towels inside heavy books for a few weeks before you use them.

Remember to be careful about the zones. Although many of these herbs are hardy, they do much better when kept to their hardiness zones. As long as you grow them in the zones in which they do best, most of these herbs will be very easy to care for, and shouldn’t need a whole lot of extra work to take care of them.
