Easy Rose Bush Care

Roses can be one of the simplest of plants and provide the most beauty to a garden.  There is a full collection of roses to decide upon.  Mainly there are three important steps to basic rose care.  Those would be rose selection, feeding and watering, and thirdly, when and how to prune.  I would suggest getting a guide such as The Ultimate Book of Roses.  It will list names of various roses and which ones are the hardiest with great photos.

The type of rose bush you select is of utmost importance.  For successfull rose bush gardening choose one that will thrive in your location.  Some types can be problematic due to their tendancy towards disease and fungus.  You may want to look into the hardier roses for best results.  Plant the rose bushes about 3 to 4 feet apart to allow enough room for them to flourish. They will require at least 5 hours of sunshine so plant them in an area you know will accommodate that need.

The most important thing for caring for your roses is watering and feeding your roses. We encourage watering early in the day, just at the roots.  A recently planted rose needs to be watered daily for two weeks.  After two weeks watering once a week is fine unless you live in a very hot climate.  For best results, you should mulch around each bush with bark or compost to keep the soil moistened.

Feeding or fertilizing should be done about once a month particularly in the Spring, Summer and Fall.  Feed the roses with rose food fertilizer that should contain a mix of fish emulsion and manure. It is adamant to stop fertilizing your roses during the winter months.

The biggest mistake most growers make in their effort to give good rose bush care is pruning.  You only need to trim them when it is necessary such as when there are dead flowers or branches.  To boost growth and blooms, count up from the branch three nodes (the small reddish growth lines) and cut there. During the first two months of the year, cut back your roses to about two feet.

You probably have a lot of questions that can be easily answered in the Ultimate Book of Roses.
