Compost Tumbler
Composting is awesome but it’s also terribly slow. Compost is great for your soil and an important part of organic gardening but it takes months to make. The best way to make compost faster is with a compost tumbler.
Chemical fertilizers are a quick solution that in the long run will only require that you buy more chemical fertilizers. Compost on the other hand, helps your soil to become rich and full of tiny microscopic life. And in the long term, that’s exactly what you want to grow robust, disease free plants. Those brand name fertilizers are designed by some guy in a lab to make his company lots of money, while compost is designed by nature to give the soil and plants what they need.
Creating compost will usually take a couple of months. If you get the ratio of browns to greens right, turn the pile to keep it aerated and don’t let it dry out you’ll be rewarded with fresh earthy compost. The more you tend your compost pile, the quicker your garden waste will become compost. Neglect the pile and it will still become compost but it’ll take a lot longer. For an example of this examine the rich soil in a forest. As leaves and tree litter fall to the ground, there isn’t anyone there making sure it’s the same wetness as a wrung out sponge. But by the time the next season rolls around, a lot of those leaves have begun decomposing and in the process, they’re feeding the trees and the cycle continues without any help from man.
You can’t really make compost during the winter. So you’ll have to get by on whatever you have leftover from the previous season to start your spring garden. But with a compost tumbler you can have a nice fresh batch of compost ready to top dress your plants in a month or two. And that’s when they need it the most.
Compost tumblers are usually sealed up nicely so that you can spin them without the contents going all over the place. The only holes in a tumbler are so that some air can get in. This is also a great feature if you’re worried about pests. You won’t have to worry about rodents with a nice sealed compost bin that’s up off the ground.
So if you’re worried that your neighbors might not like the looks of your compost pile, then why not look into getting a compost tumbler. They’re great at making compost quickly and they’ll also make a great looking addition to any yard. You really can’t be the compost that comes from a compost tumbler.
