Basic Lawn Care Tips For Beginners

When summer rolls around and it is time to relax in your yard or garden, you want to have a beautiful, healthy lawn to enjoy. Whether you are playing outside with the kids or gathering friends for a summer BBQ, a healthy green lawn is important. Not only will you enjoy your lawn more if it is healthy and well kept, but it adds value to your property. There are a number of reasons to take care of your lawn and all you need are a few tips to keep your lawn properly maintained.

Sometimes, it is tempting to cut the grass very short. After all, this means you will not have to cut it as often. However, cutting your grass to short can be harmful to your lawn. It is best to cut the grass to around 6-8 cm. Cutting the grass lower prevents the soil from absorbing moisture as well, which in turn truncates the growth of the grass’s roots. For deep, healthy roots don’t cut the grass to short. You should also avoid cutting it when the grass is wet. Cutting wet grass can lead to close crop cutting and cause your lawnmower blades to become dull and rusty.

Take care of your lawnmower blades and make sure that they are sharp. Using blunt blades to cut your grass can damage the grass and hinder the growth of your lawn. Another good way to keep your lawn healthy is to leave mowed clippings on the lawn. This will contribute much needed nitrogen to the grass creating a healthier, greener lawn.

Next to mowing, watering your lawn is one of the most important aspects of good lawn care. It is important to ensure that your lawn is not over watered or under watered. You must pay attention to even distribution of water, as well. One way to measure the amount of water your lawn receives is to place a small container on the lawn you are watering. When the level reaches around 2.5 cm, it is time to stop watering.

A well watered and mowed lawn is a healthy and nice looking lawn. In addition to measuring the amount of water on your lawn, it is best to water your lawn in the early hours of the morning. This prevents your efforts at watering from being evaporated by the sun. Early morning watering also promotes healthy grass growth.
