A Few Bird Bath Fountains Will Create a Resort for the Birds

by Birding Rob

If you have bird baths in your yard, adding bird bath fountains will make them more appealing to the birds. Birds are always looks for sources of fresh water and if your water is moving it will be easier for birds to find. Fountains can be used in standing bird baths, ponds or ground level birdbaths. Using a variety of water sources in different areas is the best way to attract more birds.

Some bird bath water fountains connect to an outside water source like a garden hose. You can adjust the height of the water by reducing the water flow. A fountain bird bath will attract many species of birds like titmice, robins, grosbeaks, nuthatches, blue jays and wild turkeys.

An alternative to a bird bath fountain is a bird bath dripper. Water drippers are shaped like a shepherd’s hook and often decorated with flowers. They can easily be attached to the side of your bird bath. Water drippers drip slowly into your bird bath at a specified rate.

Bird bath misters are a great way to attract hummingbirds since they like to drink and bathe in mid-air while flying. A mister sends out a fine spray of water allowing birds to fly through to cool off. They can be used with a bird bath or set up on their own near small trees or shrubs.

Using a water wiggler is an easy way to add movement to the water in your bird bath. It doesn’t require any wiring or plumbing to install, just 2 “D” batteries are all you need. It creates ripples on the water surface stopping mosquitoes from laying their eggs while attracting birds with the sound of running water.

If you live in an area where winter temperatures fall below freezing bird bath fountains can stop the water from freezing (to a point). You may need to use a bird bath heater if the temperatures go too low or stay below freezing for long periods of time. Providing water for your birds in winter may actually save their lives. Many birds don’t bathe in winter but open water is sure to attract them all winter long.

Whether you use bird bath fountains, water misters, water wigglers or bird bath drippers you will be happy with the variety of birds that are attracted to your yard. If you have a bird bath, investing in a way to create movement in the water will be worth the cost. The moving water will stop mosquitoes from breeding, while providing the calming sound of moving water.
