Hardy Types

Fortunately, some trees in this group require very little care and give very satisfactory crops. Examples are the black walnut, some hickories, pecans, filberts, the pawpaw, and persimmon. The beech plum (Prunus maritima) is valuable in that it will grow close to the ocean on the Atlantic coast and yet yield excellent crops of fruit used primarily for making a highly prized jelly. In the South, the pecan, paw-paw, and persimmon are perfect examples of good trees for the home garden.

Always, however, take care to avoid the easy method of watering plants by a set schedule. The condition of the plants themselves should be the only guide for watering.

Pinching plants is necessary to induce branching. The blind -grower finds out when to do this by feeling their shape. Only the growing tips should he removed gently with the fingers. Since the scented varieties are naturally more bushy than the zonals, they require less pinching.

Repotting plants like the butterfly bush is needed only a couple of times a year. When the pot becomes full of roots, move to a larger container. At any time, the root ball can be gently removed from the pot and the roots felt with the fingers to determine if repotting is necessary. The “scenteds” will be healthier, however, if kept slightly pot bound to maintain firm, woody growth. Plants grown from cuttings taken in late summer are satisfactory for house plants and do not require so much room as older, larger specimens.

Fertilizing is scarcely a problem. Newly-potted cuttings do not need feeding for several months. After that give a light sprinkling of ammonium sulphate or a balanced chemical fertilizer. The root ball should be moist before feeding to avoid burning the tender roots. Fertilizing during the period of slow growth is not advisable.

Since I was a young man some 40 years ago I used hanging planters to grow a few veggies and flowers but didn’t have a lot of success as they just dried out too fast. At that time I was in a bachelor apartment on the 11th floor and it was always windy. I couldn’t go to work and come home without my plants looking wilted.

When I saw the Topsy Turvy Strawberry Planter for the first time last year I was impressed to say the least and wanted one immediately. My mind filled with images of all the veggies I could have hanging around our backyard.

I wish we had the Topsy Turvy plant hanger when we were living in the last couple of place we had. There was hardly any backyard but the hanging planters would have done great there with such limited space.

An important thing to note about hanging planters is to grow things that won’t get to heavy as it will break your planter. So don’t try and grow pumpkins in a hanging planter. Not sure how Zuchinni would work but it might eliminate the problem we have here with slugs.

A hydroponic system refers to the cultivation of plants in water environment instead of soil. Apparently, it has been used for thousands of years, although at present it is not by far as extensive as regular agriculture. I recall when I planned my first herb garden. It was in the corner of the back yard under a Bradford Pear tree. Once I made up my mind to do a square-shaped bed I used red bricks to edge the bed and to divide it into 4 square sections. Each section was used for a different kind of herb.

In one section I planted an Italian herb garden that included oregano, basil and parsley. In another area I grew my first tea garden, full of peppermint, anise, chamomile and fennel. Another section had healing herb plants, such as aloe vera, horseradish and calendula. The last [section|quarter] had cosmetic [herb plants|herbs] like for lavender, chervil and lemon verbena that I used in soaps, lotions and shampoos.

It was a fabulous success that first year and I enjoyed the experience, but in the second year, my mints took over and my chamomile crept away while my lavender died a painfully tragic sunlight-related death.

It did not work, because I hadn’t looked at the most important thing: what my herbs need in earth, light and water to thrive and grow successfully.

While there are enough varieties of herb plants to grow outside to fill a hundred gardens, including dill, rosemary, salvias, scented geranium and vervain before you begin your herb garden check out the optimal growing conditions that your herbs will need. Each [plant|herb] [require|need]s optimal conditions to [thrive|persist|grow|survive] and prosper. Try [herb plants|herbs] like white willow, thyme, sage, poppies and lemon balm.

Plant these herbs for instant success:

• Basil: If you plant basil, you will be on easy street because basil will not need much help from you. Basil requires full or part-sun and can grow in a bed or container, as long as it has good drainage, which reminds me to mention that you will only need to water it when the soil is dry. If you are going to be cooking with your basil, be sure to use the sweet basil type of the herb for best results.

• Lemongrass: You cannot beat the aroma of lemongrass. It’s one of the happy little grasses that can get pretty tall in a single growing season, adding a spot of bright green color your garden and a delicious lemon scent. Although you can begin with seeds, I buy mine from the local greenhouse, probably because I cannot wait to add that fresh lemongrass to my Thai and Indian dinners.

• Cilantro: I must confess that cilantro is my new favorite herb to grow in my garden and use in my cooking. Its distinctive taste makes it an awesome addition to your Tex-Mex dinners and it is simple to grow.

• Chamomile: To add some extra sparkle to your hanging baskets, try the German kind of this chamomile. Snip off a few of the leaves to use in your calming tea or even your bath for some added luxury. Chamomile is considered to be a sensual plant because it has a light and woody apple scent that can heighten your senses. It can also make you smile because it looks like a daisy with white petals and a yellow center.

So test the waters, have fun, go dig in the dirt and get your hands dirty …there are a lot of ways to herb garden outside and none of them is the only way to do it—there is no right way, there is only your way.

Chamomile tea is wonderful for calming your frazzled nerves. The soothing starts as soon as you drink the delicate flavor, and the chemical compounds within the tea can have you feeling better by the end of your first cup.

When you are ready to purchase your chamomile, you will find 2 main types. These 2 kinds share similar functions, but because the appearance is different you should find it not a problem to choose the right variety for your needs.

German chamomile has a lot of uses, including teas and fragrances (like in lotions). The combination of this herb’s woody, apple smell and daisy-like appearance can brighten any room.

A nice benefit of German chamomile is that it is self-seeding, which is wonderful since it is an annual and this way you do not have to replant it annually. You can even collect the seeds to try elsewhere in your garden or give some to a friend.

It prefers dry conditions and a lot of direct or full sunlight. German chamomile herbs grow straight up, which is different than how Roman chamomile grows, and will reach a height of almost three feet.

To propagate German chamomile, begin with seeds in a container indoors or sprinkle the seeds on the ground. The seeds are so fine, there is no need to cover with dirt. Keep the sod moist, but not wet, and if you are cultivating your German chamomile in containers, wait until your seedlings are at least 4 inches high before you transplant them. The best way to increase your harvest is to plant more seeds every four weeks during the growing season. The more German chamomile you grow, the better as this herb has a low floral yield.

I read about that one wonderful variety of German chamomile is double-flowered, which I would like to see.

Roman chamomile, which is often called “true chamomile” or “English chamomile” is also good in teas to ease nervous tension. This variety is a ground cover or creeper, unlike the German chamomile which is a bushy plant; however, both varieties share the woody, apple-like scent.

This herb will only grow to about 10 inches high as it creeps along the ground. The Roman chamomile will get a little taller in the summer as well as produce pretty white and yellow flowers that are similar to German chamomile but more aromatic.

The natural oil from the Roman chamomile can be used to lighten or soften your hair. A few varieties are even used to flavor sherry.

This plant is not actually best if started from seeds, so I suggest you get it or begin with a division from someone else’s Roman chamomile.

If you’re a forgetful waterer, Roman chamomile is the plant for you since it is resistant to drought and will survive for some time without water.

Believe it or not, even though these two plants look alike, taste alike and have the same name, according to the scientists, they are not related at all.
