Enhance Your Garden With Garden Paving Slabs

Garden paving slabs can add a special touch to your yard or garden and have many different uses. These can be done by professionals or you can make it into a do it yourself project; the latter may take up quiet a bit of time and work.

One of the best uses is as a boarder for your flower beds. Garden paving slabs can be cut to fit any area you need them to fit. The premade slabs come precut so all you have to do is place them where you need them. Having these around your flower beds can let people know where your flowers are and help to prevent them being stepped on or even mowed over.

You can also put these down to be used as walkways. You can put them from your door to anywhere you want in your yard and this will help to keep dirt and mud out of your house when you take short trips out side. They will also allow you to go to your flower beds without walking through mud.

If you are a do it yourself kind of person then you have two options. You can get the concrete and make forms for them or you can buy premade slabs. The premade slabs are by far the easiest and probably best way to go.

Pouring them yourself can be very difficult and time consuming and is not recommended if you are at all unsure of what you are doing. For this you will need to make forms out of boards in the size and shape you want, dig the ground up, and probably put gravel down first.

The premade garden paving slabs come in a variety of shapes, size, and colors. These are not only easy to put down but very professional looking. You then have the choice of digging the ground and laying them or just laying them on top of the ground and letting them settle naturally.

You can also use these to create a patio for you garden area. One garden I saw had a small patio as the center point with flower beds lined with garden slabs as accents and around the edges. You can create virtually any look you want with these for your yard or garden.

If you choose to hire someone to come in and do this job for you then you may pay a lot of money for what you could have done yourself for a fraction of the cost. Plus, by doing it yourself, you will know it is all your own work and it will give you a real sense of personal satisfaction. This is a project you could do with a child or a special someone.

Garden paving slabs will last for many years to come and not only enhance the look of your home but may even raise the value of your property. A garden is something to be treasured and cared for, why not make yours a little more special with an investment like this one?

Some Of The Benefits Of Garden Walling

Some of the benefits of garden walling are obvious, while others have to be learned about. Beside the beauty and sense of tidiness they bring to an area, they can also provide other important things to your garden. Protection is one of these things. People, as well as many animals, aren’t as likely to simply walk into your garden if it has a wall around it.

A wall brings a sort of ‘old time’ mystique to a garden, unless it’s made in a really modern style. That’s one of the great benefits to these walls, there are countless styles and themes that they can be built to support. It’s not just a matter of throwing up some stones in the shape of a wall, it’s a complicated process and when done properly, and very great improvement tool.

If you decide on garden walling with brick, then you should have some experience in that area. A brick wall should be built by someone who knows what they’re doing. These people who do this kind of work go through years of training, and you can’t expect to just ‘wing’ it and come out with a very good result.

Garden walling will take some initial decisions before getting started. You need to decide on what your wall will be made from, whether it’s brick, stone, wood, metal, or a combination of any of these. Color, shape, and height and width are other considerations that you need to nail down long before you begin to build it.

I’ve seen many different types of garden walls, and some are rough edged and uneven, but still look very good. Others are nearly perfect in their matching up of bricks or blocks. For the most part, neatness and a scheme of regularity throughout the wall is what matters most. You can have one that’s consistently uneven, if you maintain that theme throughout the whole wall.

Garden walling can be one of the most favorite improvements you make to your home landscape. And as far as the garden ground goes, it gives the ground a way to level itself. It can push up against the wall when softened by the rain, and form a more level area of ground. The wall will help to hold it level once it begins to settle.

The amount of options for building a wall around your garden is part of what makes it so much fun. It’s not hard to come up with a wall that’s totally unique. You can put your own ’stamp’ on your wall by making it the way you see it in your mind. You can combine whatever materials you desire, and you can use shape and color to make it stand alone as ‘your garden wall’.

Some of the benefits of garden walling are that they not only improve the looks, but the overall function of your garden. By keeping a more level ground, the water gets distributed more evenly, as well as the food for your garden plants, whether it’s a vegetable garden or just a walking garden. These walls really add to the artistry of a good landscaping job, and are assets to your home.

Adding Beautiful and Utilitarian Water Fountains to Your Water Garden

Nautical landscaping is starting to become a preferred trend for householders all over America. There are such a lot of different pool products on the market nowadays that anybody can have the backyard water garden of their dreams. From functional products, like pumps and pond liners, to ornamental features like waterfalls and floating fish pond fountains, you will find the accoutrements to design a large, complex pool or atiny, secluded oasis. Add water plants and Koi, and you’ll have your own retreat right in your own backyard.

Each water garden needs at least a single fountain. A fountain will not only aerate your water making it a more healthy environment for fish to live in, but it’ll also help by reducing algae and bad odors. Surface sprays not only break up stagnant water, but they can also discourage insects from breeding in your pool area. Fountains are also ornamental and can supply focal points inside your yard and garden. You can choose anything from asimple garden planter with a fountain to intricate tiered or waterfall fountains. Other fountains may be faux rocks which permit water to cascade over them creating the lovely sound of running water, statuary fountains, or high-volume aquatic aerators. The choice is up to you and the kind of environment you’re trying to create.

Floating fountains can look really delightful if you’ve gotten an expansive enough pool to accommodate one. A small, 16″ floating fountain can spray 10′ high and 8′ wide. With a floating fountain you not only have the stunning visible effects, but you also take care of your aerating wants. A few of them are attached to light features to supply an awesome after-dark display. You can purchase floating fish pool fountains made from stainless-steel, fiberglass, or plastic.

All kinds of fountains are available in a big range of prices, so there’s a fish pond fountain to fit each budget. No matter if you pick a small bubbler fountain or a large statue fountain with lights and music, your fountain will make a excellent addition to your home water garden. Adding features like this to your pool add a pleasant final touch and cause it to look really professional, even if you have done all the work yourself.

Help With Lawn Care

Grass is really quite a resilient plant, so with some very simple lawn care, it’s usually quite easy to keep your lawn’s “health” good. You’ll need to water it often, fertilise and use a lawnmower to hinder the growth of weeds.

However, what happens if you have children who play on the grass, or if you’ve neglected the health of your lawn for a while? The quality of your lawn will quickly drop, and you’ll be left with a tough job of repairing it.

Unless the lawn is completely ruined, with some intensive lawn care, you should be able to fix most problems. It just may take a little time.

It is possible that the damage to the lawn is too severe to save it. At this point, it’s advisable to simply regrow the grass. You’ll need to dig up the remainder of the old grass and rotate the soil. Then scatter new seeds (your local garden center can help you choose). Then just cover them with soil.

After this, over the next few weeks and months, give the lawn some TLC - regularly water it, fertilise it and when the grass does start coming back in start to use a good lawn care routine!

If the lawn isn’t completely ruined, the most common form of damage is simply that people have let the lawn grow for weeks and weeks, and it’s become overrun with weeds and moss.

Here’s a quick warning: At this stage, if you simply grab your lawnmower and start to cut, you’ll rip up the grass and cause more damage!

Instead of this, always begin by simply cutting a couple of inches off by using a strimmer (an electric or petrol strimmer should work fine). Then, let the grass start to “heal”. Come back to it in a few days and cut a couple more inches off. And simply keep doing this until the grass is back to its normal height.

If you’ve neglected to fertilise the lawn, or the soil isn’t of great quality, the grass may start to lose its colour. If it starts to go yellow, you’ll know that the soil has a lack of nitrogen (essential for grass) in it.

You should pop down to your garden center and buy a step-system fertiliser. Not only are these really simple to use, they’re incredibly helpful for getting the grass just the right nutrients.

At this point, I think it’s important to note that you should always pull up and weeds as soon as you see them. By killing them at the root, you prevent them from spreading further; and I’m sure you know how quickly weeds can spread.

Dead patches of grass (where it’s turned dry and brown) can be a pain to deal with. The best way to repair the area is to simply start again. Rotate the soil and grass slightly, fertilise the patch and spread new seed.

When you’re waiting for the new patch to grow, you’ll really help the grass take root by watering the area often and well. Don’t drench it, but ensure that the grass has got enough water to support its growth.

That’s about all you should need to do to repair your lawn. After you have, the best piece of advice I can give you is to regularly use your strimmer and lawnmower to keep it in great condition.

Petrol strimmers can really improve the efficiency of your lawn care routine. If you’d like to read more about the petrol strimmer, visit petrolstrimmerguide.com

What Do I Require For Homemade Hydroponics?

There are quite of few different homemade hydroponics kits out there and if it is your intention to buy one, then be very sure of what you intend to grow with it as many of them can be used for any kind of crop. If you are new in the agricultural business and don’t know how to start you can always look for homemade hydroponics in a local store but I must warn you that I haven’t seen a very cheap one yet. Let’s have a closer look at what you really need to do in order to have a successful business.

What Do I Need For Homemade Hydroponics?

A tote is going to be the first thing that you need which is going to hold all your nutrients and minerals, and you also need a water pump in order to oxygenate the nutrients. An upper container is also going to be something you’ll need. It will be used to hold your smaller plant containers. In the bottom of the container you’re going to need to place a couple of holes, one of them is for filling and draining and the other is to be connected to an overflow pipe. You will need short tube pipe which will be plumbed from the bottom of the drain fitting to the water pump, and a timer clock which must be connected to the pump as well. This is the basics of an effective homemade hydroponics. The pump needs to circulate water through the system four times a day for around half an hour each session.

If you succeeded in putting together a functional homemade hydroponics then your job is half done. The next part that is truly essential is learning how and what to feed your plants. The food type is all going to depend on the type of crop you plan on growing as certain minerals and nutrients are needed to achieve the results you want.

A couple of things that can help you to succeed in this is to acquire what is known as an EC meter and a pH meter. These will help you to monitor the different mineral and nutrient levels in your system. A homemade hydroponics setup is not something that’s super easy to set up, but it’s not real hard either and with a little bit of effort and determination you can see really nice results.

Building your own homemade hydroponics setup is not something that is terribly expensive or impossible to do. You will just need two 32 liter plastic totes, an aquarium water and an air pump. A couple other items will include the fittings to flood and drain the system, some plastic tubing, and a timer.

The hydroponics hobby is vastly popular, and a lot of people use it for research as well as for their agricultural needs. This can be seen quite well by the fact of the NASA implementing the technology on the orbiting space station to grow vegetables and help to recycle the air.

The Advantages Of A Garden Office

More and more people tend to work at home these days. With the invention of internet, email, telephone and other means of connection this is quite possible. On the other hand, not all of us have space for an office in our homes. And at the same it is not a great idea to combine your paperwork with your kids, pets and kitchen chores. It is always better to have a separate place for you to work at. Therefore garden offices are becoming more and more popular. And it is quite possible to get a high quality outside office for a quite affordable price. Such offices are well insulated and have all the electricity and phone connections that you will need for your work. And since wireless internet connection has appeared such garden offices have become even more popular.

To get an outside office some investment is required. However, it is going to be much cheaper than building an extension to your house. Another great thing about getting a garden shed for your office purposes is that you will not have to get any building permits. And if you plan to rearrange your house or build an extension such permission will be required. So, you will be able to construct your garden shed and arrange your office rather quickly without any problems with papers and local building policies.

Another advantage of getting a garden office is their transportability. You will always be able to move your office with you if you decide to rent or buy another house. At the same time such offices increase the value of your property. Such garden offices could be used for different purposes. You could work, relax and play there. That is why buying a garden office could become a smart investment itself.

In some areas you will have to prove that you do not use your garden office for living. Otherwise you will have to pay taxes. It is not hard to prove this fact if you do not invite designers to decorate your outside office. Just keep it simple and you will not have problems with the taxman. Actually, it could be a great option to use your garden office as a guest house as well.
There are numerous advantages of having an office in your garden. Aside from being able to stay close to your home and spend more time with your kids and family, you will at the same time be able to separate your work and your home. You will be able to close your office and get away from those phone calls if you want to. This is something you could never do when having an office in your house.

Two Methods Of Over-Wintering Chrysanthemums

Too often called a hardy perennial, the garden chrysanthemum has not proven to be so in the North, especially the far North. Some gardeners claim that their plants have lived for several years, then along came one of the so-called “test winters.- and they are wiped out. True, there are times when they survive the winter nearly 100 per cent but there also are winters when the mortality rate is nearly 100 per cent.

Chrysanthemums are not in the same class with peonies, irises, and phlox so far as hardiness is concerned. Therefore, to be sure of having live plants in the spring, one should give chrysanthemums special protection or carry them over winter by one of the methods that will be mentioned. If the plants are growing in sandy loam and an exceedingly well drained place where the soil cannot remain excessively wet very long, they can be wintered by covering with a sizable box.

Before covering, cut off the dead tops and place enough hay, straw or some other kind of mulch over the crown of the plant so that it will fill the box when it is put into position. Some gardeners put a shovelful or two of sandy soil or pulverized peat over the plant before placing the final covering. Usually this method works very successfully.

Another way to winter chrysanthemums is to dig a clump (a plant) of each variety and place in a cold frame. Plants like zamioculcas zamiifolia plant can be dug into the ground in the cold frame and if there’s not enough room for all, clumps can be stacked on top of those that are planted, without filling the spaces in between them with soil.

The frame should be covered with canvas or a glass sash that has been darkened to keep the sun off the plants. This covering also serves to keep the plants relatively dry over winter. When really cold weather comes, lift the sash covering and place a six- to 12-inch layer of dry leaves, hay, straw, etc., over the plants and replace the sash. In this way, chrysanthemums will winter without injury and next spring the clumps can be divided to supply as many plants as needed.

A Bonsai Tree Is Pretty

If you’re looking to grow and care for a bonsai tree in your home or enclosed garden, there are a few things you should know when it comes to caring for the plant and making sure that it thrives. From the right type of soil to watering techniques, here are some tips on how to grow beautiful trees for your indoor or outdoor garden.

Most people tend to either underwater or over water the plant, and both could prove to be harmful to the plant. You can check to see if your plant needs watering by pushing the main trunk down into the soil. If you find that the soil is cool and moist, you can forego watering the tree for a few hours. If the soil is dry and crackly, it is definitely time to add some water to the pot. There are also different variations of trees, so finding out all you can about the plants from the nursery will let you know exactly how much you should water it. Also, you should use a watering can to moisturize the tress instead of a garden hose, since the force could harm the plant. If your bonsai is extremely dry, you should soak it for about two minutes in a basin large enough to emerge the pot in.

When you’re feeding a bonsai tree, be sure to get the highest quality of fertilizer you can find. The fertilizer should have ample amount of nitrogen so that the plant can grow (especially if you want your plant to get larger with time), as well as potassium and phosphates. A soil with B vitamins and iron is also necessary for the health of the tree. Most people think that this small plant can feed itself, since most other trees are able to do so , but this small plant is confined to a pot, which means you will have to provide the food. You should feed your tree about every two weeks or so to make sure that it is thriving at a normal rate. People have also been known to use beer to feed a bonsai tree; if you decide to do this, make sure that the beer is weak so that the alcohol will not damage the plant. You may also want to dilute the beer before watering the fertilizer. If you want to make sure that the leaves of the tree have a rich color and the trunk and branches are strong, you can use a multivitamin–place it in the soil of the plant on both sides of the trunk, and the nutrients will eventually seep out of the pill and into the soil.  In order for a bonsai tree to maintain its appearance, you’ll have to give it regular trimmings and spray the leaves to maintain the color. However, be careful not to spray the leaves in spring and summer months since the leaves can be damaged from the humidity.

Want to know where to purchase a bonsai tree? You can order one from sites like www.buybonsai.com, or you can check out your local nursery for varieties and care tips; see www.pike.com for more details. Happy gardening!

Wood Garden Gazebos And Others

A garden gazebo is a beautiful thing, they were common place in the royal garden’s of kings and queens in days gone by.
Using a garden gazebo to any property is a wise step, it seems that what was true many years ago is even more convincing today. Some people use a garden gazebo to increase the value of their property, gifted gardeners can use a garden gazebo to create a division between parts of a garden. An alternative use for a gazebo would be to store gardening tools and lawnmowers especially if you have a large garden.
These days almost anyone can own a garden gazebo, and assemble a garden gazebo in the backyard, garden gazebo kits offer the beauty of a wooden gazebo, many gazebos are available in a huge variety of shapes and sizes, ranging from Victorian and Amish styles to small to party size in diameter. Many gazebos come in kits that you will need to assemble yourself, don’t let this put you off, they are usually really easy to put together and generally they aren’t very expensive so you should be able to find one to suit.
Garden gazebo kits differ not only in price but also in the material of which the garden gazebo is made of.Wooden garden gazebo kits are priced according to their size and the type of wood from which they are made be it pine or cedar. Each wood has its own benefits for your garden gazebo and once you have finished constructing the gazebo, you can choose to paint it, stain it or let it sit out and absorb the elements, allowing it to change to its naturally weathered color which is usually a light shade of grey.Once you have decided on the type of wood that you are after, you will need to establish how big you want it.
Now that you have decided that you are going to purchase a gazebo, consider the environment in your location as this will affect the type of material that you will need to choose. If you are concerned that wood may not be strong enough to withstand the climate, you could consider purchasing one in metal such as aluminum and vinyl.
The huge advantage wood garden gazebos have is that they fit into a garden naturally, adding natural wooden quality that accents and compliments any garden. The next decision you will need to make is whether to have a pine or cedar gazebo, the benefit of cedar is that it is less likely to be affected by the elements but then pine is cheaper.
It shouldn’t take too long to construct your gazebo as the modern versions are usually quite easy to constructAll you have to do is set out all of the parts the gazebo manufacturer sends to you and then assemble them according to the instructions. You will need to enroll a couple of helpers to lift the roof on once you have constructed the walls. It will take you some time to complete the whole construction so don’t put yourself under to mush time pressure.
